The big news of the week has to be the recent article about dental xrays [...]

The big news of the week has to be the recent article about dental xrays and a link to brain tumors. In fact, it has been on all of the major networks, like CBS, NBC, ABC, and CNN. For those of you who haven’t seen it, the researchers are trying to make a direct association between dental xrays and brain tumors.

With myself being leader of your trusted dental team, one of my responsibilities is to protect our patients from incorrect information. After reading this article, I would like to share my thoughts with you.

First of all, they asked people they polled to remember the amount of dental xrays they had as a child, which could have been as many as 47 years ago. I don’t know about you, but I can’t remember the number of dental xrays I had when I was 10.

Also, the amount of radiation exposure by dental xrays has decreased dramatically over the last 30 years. We all remember getting xrays then about ten minutes later the dentist looking at them on this big white box. Nowadays, most offices (including ours) use digital xrays. These are instant, clearer, and larger than conventional ones. The main advantage, however, is radiation exposure. Even though the amount of radiation from the old type of xrays were small, the new digital ones are approximately 1/8 of that! In fact, one of the conclusions of the article stated “exposure to some dental xrays in the past when radiation exposure was greater than in the current era appears to be associated with an increased risk of intracranial meningioma”.

I understand your concerns. Hopefully this response will alleviate some of your concerns. Remember, even though dental xrays are safe (you get more radiation being out in the sun for a few minutes!) we ALWAYS put your health first. You can trust that we when we take our digital xrays, they are so that we can detect problems early, oftentimes BEFORE they become big problems. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me personally at doctor@dramison.com. Keep smiling!

Sleep Apnea Relief
You walk into your office and immediately wish that you could walk back out and climb into your bed. “I feel like I haven’t slept in years,” you mumble to yourself as you look through your agenda for the day.

As you peruse your calendar all you see are blocks and blocks of meetings. One after another. All seem to be stacked on top of each other creating a massive blob of talks. “Well I know what I am going to be doing all day,” you sigh as you grab your notebook and head to the first meeting of the day.

You might be suffering from sleep apnea, a sleeping disorder that disrupts breathing during sleep.
What you might not think of is a simple treatment option that comes from your neighborhood dentist, Dr. Amison. Dr. Amison can create and fit an oral appliance that keeps your jaw aligned and helps keep critical airways open.

Sleep Apnea and Your Health The alarm sounds and you cannot believe that it is [...]

Sleep Apnea and Your Health
The alarm sounds and you cannot believe that it is already time for you to wake up. “Is it time for work already?” you say with a yawn, as you try to pull yourself out of bed. “I can’t believe how tired I am.”

The entire night seems like a blur. All you can remember is that you woke up multiple times, feeling like you were gasping for breath. Your wife elbowed you a few times to try to quiet your loud snoring, and eventually moved to the guest room to try to get some sleep. “That snoring is becoming a real issue,” you hear your wife say as you make your way to the shower. “You might want to get that checked out.”

Your snoring could be the result of something much more serious. You could be suffering from sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is when a person stops breathing during their sleep. These disruptions in breathing can lead to disruptions in sleep, as individuals awake choking for air.

So what can you do to diagnose and treat sleep apnea? Dr. Amison has some tips on treatment and the answers for diagnosis in this blog, so keep reading to learn more!

Snoring, Sleep Apnea, and Sleeping
If you think that you or someone you know might be suffering from sleep apnea, the best place to start is with a visit for Dr. Brian Amison. Dr. Amison can perform a series of tests to confirm a diagnosis of sleep apnea. After the diagnosis has been confirmed, Dr. Amison can create a mouthpiece that you wear during sleep to keep the airways open and help maintain critical jaw alignment.Dr. Amison also has some tips for those who might have sleep apnea to help reduce the symptoms. These tips include:

	1.	Exercise-losing up to 10 pounds can make a significant difference in the amount that you snore and your sleep apnea. Take the time to exercise and eat healthy, well-balanced meals. You will be amazed by the results and the changes to your sleeping patterns.
2.	Change the way you sleep-sleeping on your back can restrict your airways. Try sleeping on your side for an optimal sleeping position.
3.	Watch your bedtime-two hours before you go to sleep, make sure that you avoid alcohol, caffeine, and heavy meals. All of these can interfere with the quality of your sleep, and should be avoided.
4.	No more sedatives-sedatives can relax your throat muscles and increase airway obstruction which is associated with snoring.

Visit Dr. Brian Amison
If you think that you might be suffering from sleep apnea, do not hesitate to contact Dr. Amison for you initial consultation. Dr. Amison will review your symptoms and perform a series of test to evaluate if you have sleep apnea. Your snoring can then be addressed so you can start sleeping, and living your days to the fullest!

Dr. Brian Amison, Diabetes, and Your Oral Health When you think of oral hygiene, what [...]

Dr. Brian Amison, Diabetes, and Your Oral Health

When you think of oral hygiene, what are the first things that come to mind? Brushing your teeth? Making sure that you floss everyday? Biannual trips to the dentist’s chair? Avoiding too much sugar and candy?

One notion that probably does not come to mind is diabetes. Diabetes and oral health might seem like they are completely separate topics, but in fact, the two go together like peanut butter and jelly. With diabetes comes the need for increased awareness about the status of your oral health. Luckily for you, Dr. Brian Amison is here to provide you with the latest dental health tips for you and your diabetes.

In this blog, you will learn about diabetes, your oral health, and everything that you need to know! So to find out more, keep reading Dr. Amison’s blog!

All about Diabetes

While you might associated diabetes with constantly checking blood sugar and watching the sugar content of food, there is something else to consider– your teeth and gums! Diabetic patients are more likely to develop periodontal disease. If blood sugar is less controlled, it is more likely that oral health problems will arise and can cause harm. Some of the symptoms that diabetics might suffer from include:

Dry Mouth- with uncontrolled diabetes, there can be a decrease in the amount of saliva flow. This can result in dry mouth, soreness, ulcers, infections, and even tooth decay.

Gum Inflammation-with diabetes, the body’s ability to fight infections is reduced making gingivitis and periodontitis more likely to sneak their ways in!

Poor Healing of the Oral Tissues-it can take longer for tissues to heal in the mouth, due to decreased blood supply.

Thrush- thrush is a fungal infection of the mouth and the tongue. Since the thrush fungus thrives with high levels of sugar, it can most likely be found in patients with uncontrolled diabetes.

Burning Mouth and Tongue

Additional Consequences with Smoking- if you smoke and have diabetes, you are 20x more likely to develop periodontal disease! Stop smoking today!

Your Dental Health Tips

So if you have diabetes and want to take the best care of your teeth and gums, what are you supposed to do? Below you will find 6 of Dr. Amison’s best dental health tips to keep your smile at its brightest and healthiest!

Visit Dr. Amison-have your teeth cleaned and checked at least two times a year. The more that you can have the professional cleaning, the better!

Floss and floss-make flossing a daily habit. Get used to it as part of your daily rituals.

Brush and Brush and Brush-brush your teeth after every meal and your mouth will thank you for it. The more that you are able to pay attention to your mouth post-meal, the better, so grab that toothpaste!

Your Toothbrush-replace your toothbrush often and use a soft-bristled brush. This will keep your mouth healthy and free of any additional bacteria.

Denture Care-if you wear dentures, make sure that you clean them daily. The cleaner you can keep your mouth, the fewer infections you will face.

Quit smoking-this might have been mentioned earlier in the blog, but if you smoke, then there is no better time to stop than today.

If you have any questions about your oral health and diabetes, do not hesitate to contact Dr. Amison. We are here to keep your smile beautiful and healthy, so why not stop by and see us today!

If you are suffering from Diabetes, then you probably have quite a bit on your mind on a daily basis. You have to think about your blood sugars, when you need to eat, and what you have to do if you are in an emergency situation.

But one thing that you might not consider when managing your diabetes is the state of your oral health. “How can my dental health be impacting by my diabetes?” you might be wondering.

The answers to your questions and even more information about diabetes and oral health can be found in Dr. Brian Amison’s blog! To learn more, keeping reading!

Dental Care and Diabetes

Did you know that dental care is especially important for people with diabetes because these individuals face a higher risk of developing oral health problems? If blood sugars are not controlled properly, the more likely that oral health problems will form, and in-turn, can cause some unpleasant health issues.

Some of these higher risks include:

Higher risk of developing dry mouth due to decreased saliva flow. This can lead to soreness, ulcers, tooth decay, and infections.

Risk of developing gum inflammation, gingivitis, and periodontitis. In summary, a greater risk of developing periodontal disease.

Overall poor healing of oral tissues.

Increased chances of developing Thrush. Thrush is a fungal infection of the mouth and the tongue. Thrush is known to thrive on high sugar levels of people with diabetes.

So what should you do if you have diabetes to protect your oral health? Dr. Brian Amison has some dental tips below to make your smile as bright as possible!

Monitor your blood sugars and keep your sugar level normal and regular.

Keep Dr. Amison updated about the state of your diabetes. Let Dr. Amison know if you have had any hypoglycemic episodes, any issues with your blood sugars, or if you have any concerns about your diabetes.

Give Dr. Amison’s office a copy of your medications, primary care physician’s name and number, and your insulin dosage.

Know that dental procedures take a bit longer to heal in patients with diabetes. Make sure that you follow Dr. Amison’s post-procedure instructions fully so that you can heal as soon as possible. As always, if you have any questions, feel free to talk to Dr. Amison.

Brush your teeth at least twice a day, and floss too! By maintaining good oral hygiene, you are protecting your oral health until you return to see Dr. Amison twice a year.

The Cost of Porcelain Veneers
So you might be thinking that porcelain veneers sound like a good fit for you. They can be used to repair teeth that are chipped, cracked, worn down, gaps, or even severely stained teeth. But now your mind starts to wander to the other side of things, “What about the cost of these porcelain veneers? Can I actually afford them?”

Typically, the fees associated with porcelain veneers depend on a few variables, including:

•	The fees of the cosmetic dentist involved in the procedure. Both the skills of the ceramist making the veneers and the cosmetic dentist who places the veneers

•	The location where the treatment takes place. Costs of veneers and treatment can vary in different areas of the country

•	The type of dental insurance that you have. Many dental insurance companies do not cover cosmetic dentistry procedures

•	How many teeth that require the veneers

If the above information seems like overwhelming, then rest assured that when you come in to see Dr. Amison for a consultation, that all of the financial ins-and-outs will be discussed. Dr. Amison works hard to make sure that you can afford the smile that you deserve and can discuss the potential for financing plans if necessary.

Dr. Amison: Today I’d like to speak to Kelly about your position in our office. You have recently become an EFDA. The obvious question is, what’s an EFDA?

Kelly: Well, EFDA stands for expanded function dental assistant. This means that I can do more for our patients now than when I first started in our practice.

Dr. Amison: I know that you are very modest Kelly, but could you please explain what makes an EFDA different than a dental assistant?

Kelly: Sure. In addition to helping you with temporaries, I can now do fillings after you have prepared our patient’s tooth.

Dr. Amison: So are you putting me out of work?

Kelly: (laughing) On no, we need you because I can only do this when you are in the office. But I can also help our hygienists during recare appointments. I have been certified to do sealants by myself and also polish our patient’s teeth after our hygienists have finished removing the buildup from the teeth.

Dr. Amison: I know you had to have additional training in order to become an EFDA.

Kelly: Yes, I had to go back to school after work and on certain Saturdays. I also had to do my externship in a couple of dental clinics. It was a tough road, but I am glad that I did it!

Dr. Amison: I am too! Well thanks for sharing today Kelly. Have a great day, and keep smiling!

Changes to Your Smile
The New Year is right around the corner. The time where everyone gets together, shakes noise makers, and counts down to the start of 2012. Confetti flies up in the air, people laugh and are merry, and everyone starts to discuss the changes that will take place on January 1st.

So while many will vow to slim down their waistlines or start reading the newspaper every day, why don’t you resolve to do something that will boost your self-confidence and make your smile glisten?

If you have any teeth that are severely stained or missing, then maybe you should consider seeing Dr. Brian Amison for porcelain veneers. These veneers cover the front of your teeth to improve your overall smile appearance. Porcelain veneers are thin shells that bond to the front of your teeth that can change the shape, size, or length of your teeth. With this technology, you can have a brand new, beautiful smile in 3 visits. That’s right—you could have an amazing smile faster than you ever thought possible!

To learn more about the porcelain veneers procedure, continue reading Dr. Amison’s blog!

The Porcelain Veneers Procedure
When you come into our Canton, Ohio office to discuss porcelain veneers, Dr. Amison will take the necessary steps to ensure that porcelain veneers are best for you. During the consultation, Dr. Amison will examine your teeth and see which teeth would be best suited for porcelain veneers. Dr. Amison might take x-rays as well so he has the complete view of your mouth for the best evaluation possible.

During the second visit, Dr. Amison will remove about ½ mm of your tooth surface to make way for the veneers. He will take an impression of your teeth so the porcelain veneers can be custom fitted to suit your mouth shape. The impression is sent to a dental laboratory and can be created in one to two weeks.

On your third visit, you will be fitted with the newly created porcelain veneers. Dr. Amison will examine the porcelain veneers and their placement in your mouth. Using his excellent technical and sculpting skills, Dr. Amison will trim the veneer as needed so that the porcelain veneers can fit their best.

By the end of your visit, you will have a beautiful smile that you can be proud of and show to the world. Not only will you have teeth that have a natural appearance, but the porcelain veneers are durable and stain resistant.

And that is the process! 1-2-3 and you are on your way to the smile that you have been wishing for during every New Year’s party.

The holidays are right around the corner, and you know what that means—lots of family, food, and the dreaded pictures. Every time that you turn the corner, you see more and more cameras. “Come on Uncle Bill!” your nephews exclaim. “Get in the picture with us!”

If you look in the mirror and are immediately disheartened by what you see, then you are in luck! Dr. Brian Amison is here to make your smile shine all year long, so all that you are worrying about is that the side being photographed is your “better side.”

What Dr. Brian Amison Does
So you might be wondering what cosmetic dentistry entails? “How can a few procedures completely change my smile?” you might be thinking to yourself. Well with Dr. Amison’s skills and the latest in dental technology, your smile can be completely revamped so that you never have to hesitate to smile ever again! Below are the most common in-office procedures that we perform, so check them out and see which one might be right for you!

•	Tooth Whitening- So maybe your teeth are not as bright as you would like them? Maybe they do not shine like they once did? With our whitening systems, you can have your teeth sparkling in no time! You can take a tooth-whitening kit home which you can wear to sleep, or you can see amazing results from our in-office system. Either way, you will be walking out the door with renewed confidence and a beautiful smile!

•	Porcelain Veneers- Porcelain veneers are thin shells that fit over the front of your teeth and can completely change the look of your smile. They are used to repair teeth that are worn down, broken, severely stained, and even teeth with gaps. The entire procedure usually takes about 3 visits, and by the end of the process, you will not believe that your new smile is your own!

•	Dental Implants- For many people, the last thing that they want to continuously be thinking about is if their dentures are slipping or if they are having speech problems because of missing teeth. With dental implants, you have a durable, natural-looking solution that will enhance your confidence. Dr. Amison makes the dental implant procedure, quick, easy, and painless. Sounds like a win-win-win situation!

•	Tooth-Colored Fillings- It used to be that silver amalgams were the way to go as a choice for fillings. But today, there are other options that are much more natural, and keep you away from mercury and other metals. With tooth-colored fillings, you find yourself with a near “perfect” color match. To top it off (literarily), the bond from these fillings is actually better than amalgams, which helps elevate the natural strength of your teeth.
