If you are suffering from Diabetes, then you probably have quite a bit on your mind on a daily basis. You have to think about your blood sugars, when you need to eat, and what you have to do if you are in an emergency situation.
But one thing that you might not consider when managing your diabetes is the state of your oral health. “How can my dental health be impacting by my diabetes?” you might be wondering.
The answers to your questions and even more information about diabetes and oral health can be found in Dr. Brian Amison’s blog! To learn more, keeping reading!
Dental Care and Diabetes
Did you know that dental care is especially important for people with diabetes because these individuals face a higher risk of developing oral health problems? If blood sugars are not controlled properly, the more likely that oral health problems will form, and in-turn, can cause some unpleasant health issues.
Some of these higher risks include:
- Higher risk of developing dry mouth due to decreased saliva flow. This can lead to soreness, ulcers, tooth decay, and infections.
- Risk of developing gum inflammation, gingivitis, and periodontitis. In summary, a greater risk of developing periodontal disease.
- Overall poor healing of oral tissues.
- Increased chances of developing Thrush. Thrush is a fungal infection of the mouth and the tongue. Thrush is known to thrive on high sugar levels of people with diabetes.
So what should you do if you have diabetes to protect your oral health? Dr. Brian Amison has some dental tips below to make your smile as bright as possible!
- Monitor your blood sugars and keep your sugar level normal and regular.
- Keep Dr. Amison updated about the state of your diabetes. Let Dr. Amison know if you have had any hypoglycemic episodes, any issues with your blood sugars, or if you have any concerns about your diabetes.
- Give Dr. Amison’s office a copy of your medications, primary care physician’s name and number, and your insulin dosage.
- Know that dental procedures take a bit longer to heal in patients with diabetes. Make sure that you follow Dr. Amison’s post-procedure instructions fully so that you can heal as soon as possible. As always, if you have any questions, feel free to talk to Dr. Amison.
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day, and floss too! By maintaining good oral hygiene, you are protecting your oral health until you return to see Dr. Amison twice a year.
- QUIT SMOKING. If you smoke and have diabetes, you are 20 times more likely to develop thrush and periodontal disease. If you need to learn about ways to quit to help your overall health and well being, visit www.smokefree.gov

New Year’s Resolutions?
The confetti has settled, the balloons have popped, and the holiday parties now seem like a distant memory. Instead, the festivities have been replaced with work, hauling the kids to and from school, and loads of laundry. And still, that New Year’s Resolution list remains stuck to the refrigerator door with one goal: Improve my smile this year.
Just because a majority of the population has already forgotten about New Year’s resolution doesn’t mean that you should put off your ambitions too. If you have been waiting to transform your smile to one that you are proud of, then this is the time to act!
Not only do you have Dr. Brian Amison in your Canton, Ohio neighborhood, but you have a dentist with the impeccable skills to change your smile from less than ideal to stunning. Dr. Amison can make your smile beam with the help of porcelain veneers. These veneers attach to the front of your teeth and act as a durable shell that can give you the teeth that you never thought possible.
Dr. Amison then takes the time to sculpt and shape these porcelain veneers to completely fit and frame your mouth. With porcelain veneers, you can have that “Hollywood Smile” in little time—the smile that you thought you might have to wait years for and spend time in painful orthodontics. To learn more about porcelain veneers, keep reading Dr. Amison’s blog!
The Cost of Porcelain Veneers
So you might be thinking that porcelain veneers sound like a good fit for you. They can be used to repair teeth that are chipped, cracked, worn down, gaps, or even severely stained teeth. But now your mind starts to wander to the other side of things, “What about the cost of these porcelain veneers? Can I actually afford them?”
Typically, the fees associated with porcelain veneers depend on a few variables, including:
• The fees of the cosmetic dentist involved in the procedure. Both the skills of the ceramist making the veneers and the cosmetic dentist who places the veneers
• The location where the treatment takes place. Costs of veneers and treatment can vary in different areas of the country
• The type of dental insurance that you have. Many dental insurance companies do not cover cosmetic dentistry procedures
• How many teeth that require the veneers
If the above information seems like overwhelming, then rest assured that when you come in to see Dr. Amison for a consultation, that all of the financial ins-and-outs will be discussed. Dr. Amison works hard to make sure that you can afford the smile that you deserve and can discuss the potential for financing plans if necessary.
As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact Dr. Amison. Dr. Amison can discuss your dental health, the cost of dentistry, and evaluate what your insurance covers. With Dr. Amison, all you have to do is smile and we will make sure that we help you attain the best results.
Don’t wait to get started on your New Year-New Smile resolution! Call today!

Staff Interview with Kelly – What’s an EFDA?

Dr. Amison: Today I’d like to speak to Kelly about your position in our office. You have recently become an EFDA. The obvious question is, what’s an EFDA?
Kelly: Well, EFDA stands for expanded function dental assistant. This means that I can do more for our patients now than when I first started in our practice.

Now what were you thinking when you saw the title of this? My son is the fourth one from the left on the top picture. I would tell you what number he is, but you wouldn’t be able to tell because of the mud. It was a cold day and there was mud EVERYWHERE. I must say that it was a miserable day, but at least my son’s team won!
I was fortunate enough to help coach my son’s team. Even though it was a significant time commitment, it was nice to spend time with him. These are memories that will last forever. (Not to mention that I am still finding mud from that day everywhere!)
My long winded point is to make sure that you find time to spend with those you care about. It may be a couple of minutes before bedtime, or at dinner. One of my mentors, who was a fantastic orthodontist and all around great person, gave me some advice that I will never forgot. He told me to carve out time for people you care about. He said you never know what life will bring you. About a month after telling me this, he unexpectantly passed away, leaving behind a wife and three children. Even though he is gone, his children will always know how special they were to him because he was involved with everything they did, in addition to his duties as an orthodontist.
I admit that I must remind myself of the wisdom shared by my good friend. Sometimes, I guess you just have to get dirty!
Have a great day, and keep smiling!
Components of Dental Sealants

Dental Sealants? What are those?
If you have children, then you know how they can brush their teeth. Toothpaste is everywhere, on the sink, on the mirror, on their faces. Everywhere, with the exception of their teeth.
With these “brushing skills” you cannot help but wonder, are my children’s teeth protected against cavities?
While it is important to teach kids the basics of oral hygiene, there are also other options that you can consider to help protect your children’s teeth. Dental sealants offer protection to new adult teeth to ward against tooth decay. Since tooth decay is permanent, sealants help protect against it and keep you kids’ teeth healthy.
Does this all sound too good to be true? Keep reading to learn more about the impact dental sealants could have on your children’s teeth!
The Dental Sealants Process
The basic function of sealants is to keep germs and food particles out of deep grooves in teeth. Most tooth decay with children occurs in these back molar surfaces, so keeping these areas protected is crucial.
Permanent back molars are best suited for sealants, and the sealant process is simple and painless. Here is the step by step process for dental sealant application:
1. First the teeth are cleaned and readied for the dental sealant
2. A gel is placed on the teeth that are going to receive the sealant
3. The teeth are washed and dried
4. Sealant is then applied to the teeth, getting into the grooves of the back molars
5. A bright light goes onto the teeth to help the sealant dry more quickly
6. The sealant forms a protective barrier to help fight against cavities
After this procedure takes place, sealants can last between 5 and 10 years, and the sealants can be reapplied at a later date when the sealant wears off. The sealant is barely noticeable, and can only be seen up close.
Once dental sealant is applied, normal dental hygiene practices continue to be necessary. Brushing teeth twice a day, flossing, and coming into Dr. Amison’s office for regular checkups are all musts. For children, continuing the use of fluoride also remains essential, as dental sealants and fluoride work hand-in-hand for lasting protection against tooth decay.
Some schools are even sponsoring sealant programs so that all children can have good fighting mechanisms against tooth decay. For more about these programs, check out the Center for Disease Control’s website.

Oral Cancer Prevention and Screening

Oral Cancer- What is that?
You know that you are supposed to brush your teeth once in the morning and once at night. You know that you are supposed to go to the dentist every six months for your routine checkups. You know that you are supposed to eat right, and stay away from cigarettes. But do you know the rationale behind why you are supposed to do all of these things?
One reason to follow these recommendations is to prevent Oral Cancer from developing. Oral Cancer is simply defined as mouth cancer, but it can affect your lips, gums, cheek lining, under your tongue at the mouth floor, and the salivary glands which produce saliva.
Oral Cancer often starts as a very small, white or red patch in the mouth, which can be unnoticeable to the untrained eye. If these spots are left undetected, then the cancer can spread from the mouth to other parts of the body, causing more and more damage.
But do not fear, there are ways to prevent Oral Cancer, starting with your dentist, Dr. Amison! By following some these quick tips, you can stay healthy and keep smiling for years to come.
Six Oral Cancer Prevention Pointers
1. Eat Right- This tip is not revolutionary, but it does make sense. Increasing the amount of healthy foods in your diet while eliminating the bad ones increases your body’s ability to fight off disease and keep your immune system functioning smoothly. How does this relate to Oral Cancer? The better your body can operate, the better it can protect you from harmful growths, such as cancer. Combine healthy eating with exercise, and you are creating a healthy lifestyle that will keep you going for the years to come.
2. Ban cigarettes and spit tobacco from your life- smokers and ‘dippers’ not only have the highest chance of developing Oral Cancer, but their rates for other cancers skyrockets as well. Do yourself a favor by learning how you can quit smoking and dipping. Visit the American Cancer Association’s website and learn how you can find the support you need to change into a non-smoker.
3. While you’re at it, watch the drinking- alcohol abuse is one of the top factors for developing Oral Cancer, especially when you combine it with smoking or chewing tobacco. The dehydrating effect of alcohol on the cell walls of the mouth increases the capability of tobacco carcinogens to attack mouth tissue. When you throw in excessive alcohol use, which lowers the body’s ability to use antioxidants to stop cancer formation, then you have a full battle happening in the small space of your mouth. Moderation is key. Drink less, and smoke none for your health.
4. Sunscreen, the latest summer accessory- not only do you want to lather on the sunscreen to protect your body from the sun’s rays, but you also want to find a lip-balm with sunscreen to protect your lips. If your lips are constantly exposed to the sun and unprotected, then there is an increase risk of developing Oral Cancer.
5. Brush, Brush, Brush, Repeat, Repeat, Repeat- You know the routine. Brush your teeth fully and completely twice a day and throw in an order of flossing. The better your dental hygiene is, the more that your overall health will benefit. Just make it a habit and your body is sure to thank you.
6. Keep your appointments with Dr. Amison- At least twice a year, you need to have your dental checkups. During this time, Dr. Amison will perform screenings for Oral Cancer, just by using the tools in his office! You will leave each visit knowing that you have just taken a preventive step away from Oral Cancer, plus your teeth are going to be a brilliant white. It’s a win-win situation!

1. Hearing the drill- It is true, there are certain noises that are associated with the dentist’s office. Drills, water, brushing are just a few of the sounds that you might here during a typical visit. The most important thing to realize is that each noise serves a purpose to make each person’s dental health better. They are not used for a modern day ‘torture devices.’ A drill is used to fix a tooth that is decaying so that the tooth can become healthy again, and not cause you pain. Rushing water is used to rinse your mouth after another successful checkup. By checking your mindset to see the purpose the dentist tools associated with the sounds, you can help make your experience much more positive and much less scary.
2. I haven’t been to the dentist in awhile…- So you haven’t been to see Dr. Amison for one year? Two years? Ten years? The amount of time that you have not been into the office does not matter. What matters is that you are committing to better dental health now by coming in. You are not going to be judged or humiliated, so that fear can be tossed right out the window. You are going to be treated with kindness and consideration, which is what our office is renowned for and you will have the opportunity to experience.
3. I hate needles- There are very few people on earth who would claim that they love needles, especially when they are in their mouths. While situations that require numbing agents in needles form are never as fun as Disneyland, these situations do not have to be full of doom and gloom. Dr. Amison makes certain that you feel as little pain as possible, and he has the testimonials to prove it! Check out what other patients have to say about Dr. Amison’s pain-free techniques for their smiles.
4. I don’t know what is happening during my visit- You don’t have to worry about not understanding what is going on during a visit with Dr. Amison. Dr. Amison can follow a ‘tell-show-do’ technique that will keep you informed during your entire time at our office. For each step, you can have a detailed description of the procedure, where you will learn about what Dr. Amison is going to do. He can then show you what tools he is going to use for the procedure and how they are used. Finally, and when you are ready, Dr. Amison can complete the procedure. It is as easy as that! Composite vs. Amalgam Fillings
- Posted in: Uncategorized
- on October 24, 2011
Do I Need a Filling?
You are sitting at your desk at working, typing up the latest expense report as the second-hand clicks away in the background. “Ouch!” you scream in your head, and grab your cheek. “This tooth is really hurting,” you mumble. “Probably should cut out that afternoon sugar rush,” you say, staring at a doughnut.
It might be a cavity, also known as a tooth that is decaying, which could be causing such pain. For those of you who are members of Dr. Amison’s Cavity Free Club, you have not experienced the pain associated with a cavity (Kudos to you). But for those of you who have had a cavity before, you know that a dentist, like Dr. Amison, will remove the part of the tooth that is decaying and replace it with a filling. But do you know about the latest in ‘filling technology’ and what that means to you? Read on to learn about the very latest in composite and amalgam fillings and what these options translate to for your dental health.
What is the Difference in Fillings?
Even though a filling is very small, you still have multiple options when it comes to which filling would work best for you.
Composite fillings are one of Dr. Amison’s trademark procedures, as this tooth colored closely matches the color of your natural teeth, without leaving silver in your mouth. The composite filling can add extra structural support to a tooth than other fillings, such as the amalgam type. Also, more of a tooth can be saved by using composite, since it does not require as much space as an amalgam filling. Even chipped, broken, or worn teeth can be enhanced and fixed with composite fillings.
While there are a ‘mouthful’ of positives supporting composite fillings, there are a few things to consider before you make a decision. Composite fillings usually last 5 years, as opposed to 10 to 15 years like the amalgams do. The expense is usually greater with composite fillings, and more visits may be required to prepare the tooth for the process.
Amalgams are best known as silver fillings, for obvious reasoning. They are made out of silver to fill the decayed portion of a tooth, however, more of the tooth must be destroyed in order to make space to hold the silver filling. These are the fillings that you can see, as silver dotting can line each tooth that has had a cavity.
Silver fillings can last 10 to 15 years and are very durable, allowing for a patient to chew normally, typically without issues. While these amalgams are less expensive than their composite counterpart, amalgams have a greater rate of expansion and contraction when exposed to heat and cold that can cause a tooth to crack or fracture. Translated, that means that if you drink something too hot, or too cold, then your filling could cause your tooth to crack. Aesthetics are another consideration when choosing between amalgams and composite fillings. Amalgams can make an entire tooth appear gray, due to the silver in the middle of the tooth. The inside of your mouth, depending on how many cavities that require filling, could be covered in silver.
While this is a ton of information for you to process regarding fillings and what makes them different, rest assured that all of your filling options will be discussed between you and Dr. Amison at your visit.
What Should I Do if I Need a Filling?
If you are experiencing any type of tooth pain, then do not hesitate to call Dr. Amison’s office at 330-754-4578 to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. When you come into the office, we will be able to check your teeth to see if there is any tooth decay, and then move forward with a plan of action.
If you do need a filling, we will be able to discuss the differences between both composite and amalgam fillings, and then make a decision based on what best suits you.
Even if you do not need a filling, make sure that you are practicing good dental hygiene at home to keep those cavities away! Flossing, good brushing techniques, and coming to regularly scheduled appointments are all a part of your overall health. And if you are ever in doubt about how a tooth or your mouth is feeling, just contact your friendly Ohio staff and Dr. Amison so that we can your smile glowing!

What is Family Dentistry?
Some people can remember what they thought of the dentist when they were kids. The dentist was scary—there was no other way to think of those visits. They knew the procedures were painful, the cleanings were considered as brutal, and the dentist would make them answer questions while he aggressively inspected each and every tooth for cavities.
While those might be popular associations with the dentist’s office, that is not the same experience you will have in Dr. Amison’s office.
